Jolyon Howorth has been full-time Visiting Professor of Political Science at Yale University (USA) since 2002. He is also Jean Monnet Professor ad personam and Professor Emeritus of European Politics at the University of Bath (UK).
Previous appointments were at: University of Paris III-Sorbonne-Nouvelle, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Aston University (UK). He has held a Senior Research Fellowship at the European Union’s Institute for Security Studies. He has published extensively in the field of European politics and history, especially security and defense policy and transatlantic relations – fifteen books and over two hundred and fifty journal articles and chapters in books. Recent books include Security and Defence Policy in the European Union, Palgrave, 2nd edition 2014. Recent articles have appeared in journals such as Journal of Conflict Resolution; Review of International Studies; Survival; International Affairs; Foreign Policy.
He has held many grants from: the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the European Union (most recently the Framework 6 program), the UK Department of Education and Science, the French Ministry of Defence and the French Ministry of Research. He has given over four hundred and fifty papers at international conferences and has engaged in extensive consultancy with governments and public and private bodies on European security and defense issues. He is a frequent guest on the French cable TV channel France-24.
